Golf Clubs History
The golf course in Hluboká nad Vltavou
is located in a beautiful countryside in Southern Bohemia below the chateau in Hluboká; the golf course covers an area of 64 ha and consists of 18 + 9 holes and a large driving range.
On 23rd July 1999, the first golf training started on a training meadow that was created on an area of about 300 x 250 metres by mere mowing the Poříčská louka meadow. Service was provided from a prefabricated unit placed on a concrete panel. This activity was not advertised; however, it quickly became known and prospective golfers, local people as well as people from České Budějovice and the surrounding region, started to visit the training meadow. People from other clubs who were on holiday in the surrounding region and already had some knowledge about golf used to arrive in small groups too. Despite all this, it was more or less public enlightenment and people started to understand that this sport was not aimed at certain exclusive group of people but that it was available to almost everybody. Alongside this activity, a decision to create a simple public golf course was made; this golf course started to be built in August 1999 by mowing golf tracks and creating putting greens without any constructional modifications.
At the beginning of 2000, both the training meadow and the public golf course started to be used; from the very beginning, their utilization was considerably higher than in the previous year. Especially the golf course available to public started to be frequently used by beginners as well as relatively experienced golfers. However, this situation also increased both interest in training on the training meadow and golfers' interest in the rules and ethics of golf. People started to understand that they had to follow good manners when on the golf course. The golf course was officially opened on 13th May 2000; at the same time, the club started to function. Apart from the representatives of both municipality and regional authorities, the opening ceremony was also attended by the president of the Czech Golf Federation at that time, Mr. Hanuš Goldscheider.
On 19th August 2000, the first "Hlubocký čáp" tournament was organized on the public golf course.
The interest in golf in Hluboká was substantially increasing and therefore a decision to build an 18-hole PAR 71 golf course with a length of 5 900 m on the Podskalská louka meadow in Hluboká was made. The 9-hole golf course has been run as "public" golf course for 4 years; last year, the 18-hole golf course was completed and prepared to be opened on 7th September 2002. However, while remaining minor modifications were taking place there, the golf course was flooded. The 9-hole golf course has been run as "public" golf course for 4 years; last year, the 18-hole golf course was completed and prepared to be opened on 7th September 2002. However, while remaining minor modifications were taking place there, the golf course was flooded.
Flash flood in golf course 2002
The entire golf course was under water so that it resembled a pond with an area of 70 ha. The golf course was flooded up to a height of 4 metres; the water was receding very slowly because the landscape was virtually flat, with no slopes; the water ran off only through ditches, which were normally welcome water obstacles on the golf course. These ditches had been built to drain or release water from surrounding ponds; they flow into the Vltava River. However, because the level of the Vltava River was high above its standard level, the river gradient reversed and the water could not run off. As a result, the golf course remained flooded as late as by September 2003; it was too long for the lawns to survive under water.
The water moved slowly, which fact preserved the constructions of greens and teeing grounds; however, a coherent layer of fine mud remained all over the area and all lawns including roughs were degraded forever. 18 wooden bridges were newly built before the floods took place; 4 of them were completely destroyed and washed away. The service house and driving range were also completely destroyed.
Briefly about the present situation
The Golf Club in Hluboká nad Vltavou pays great attention to the youth; e.g. so-called "preparatory school for young golfers" has been established; in the future, the club plans to organize golf classes for secondary-school students. So-called "Beginners' Afternoons" were newly established in the 2004 season; they regularly took place every Wednesday from the beginning of May, always from 02:00 – 05:00 PM. These afternoons were aimed at all people who would like to try golf "on their own skin" and thus acquaint themselves with this sport.
Our teams of male golfers, female golfers and junior golfers take part in national competitions; our team of male golfers will try to move up to Top League this year. Contests with partner clubs not only from the Czech Republic but also from Austria are organized regularly. Tours to Austria and Italy, where club tournaments and contests with local golf clubs take place, are organized for our club members. We can say that these activities contribute to the successful development of club life.
